Our History
When Medicom founder Ronald Reuben was just 23 years old, a conversation with a friend changed the course of his life. From that conversation, Reuben learned that the AIDS crisis had created an urgent need for personal protective equipment for healthcare workers. Following his entrepreneurial instincts and desire to make a difference, he immediately set to work developing high-quality medical examination gloves under the SafeTouch brand.
Demand grew rapidly and it wasn’t long before Mr. Reuben purchased his own factory. He equipped himself with state-of-the-art technology, traveled the world to source the highest quality raw materials and hired leading scientific experts to design and develop the most reliable personal protective equipment on the market. This unwavering commitment to quality, reliability and continuous innovation has earned Medicom the trust of healthcare professionals worldwide.
Today, with more than 30 years of scientific expertise, manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe and Asia, and a global network of suppliers, Medicom offers a wide range of personal protective equipment (PPE), infection control solutions and patient care products used by millions of professionals around the world every day.
History
Ronald Reuben founded A.R. Medicom in Montreal, Quebec, and launched the Medicom SafeTouch® glove brand in response to the urgent need for medical gloves, which were among the precautions mandated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to protect healthcare workers against the HIV (AIDS) virus.
Medicom began manufacturing masks and paper products at the United Medical Enterprises (UME) plant in Augusta, Georgia. Medicom purchased the UME plant the following year.
Medicom acquired AMD Ritmed from Pharmascience to launch its medical division.
Medicom launched its Asian arm with Medicom Asia, in Hong Kong, China.
Medicom continued its growth in Asia, opening a plant and a sales office in Shanghai.
Medicom acquired its Japanese distributor’s business and formed Medicom Japan based in Kobe.
Medicom acquired Kolmi-Hopen, a manufacturer of surgical and industrial facemasks and importer of industrial protection products, located near Angers, France.
Medicom acquired Hedy Canada Inc., a well-respected company providing infection control and disposable products to the dental industry throughout Canada and the U.S. for nearly 30 years.
Medicom entered into long-term agreements with local governments to ensure local supply of personal protective equipment and opened its first Canadian manufacturing plant in Montreal, Quebec, to manufacture face masks and N95 respirators.
Medicom entered into long-term agreements with the governments of Singapore, France and the UK to manufacture face masks and N95 respirators.
Medicom’s global team nearly doubled, growing from 1,000 employees to an impressive 2,000+ in just two years. This expansion highlights our commitment to scaling our workforce and fostering a diverse, talented community from around the world.
Medicom ensures vertical integration and supply chain resiliency through additional nitrile glove and mask filter manufacturing capabilities. These expansions increase Canada’s and Quebec’s resilience to future pandemics and will ensure that front-line healthcare workers continue to have a reliable local supply of personal protective equipment.
