International Women’s Day (March 8) is an opportunity for Medicom to highlight the contributions of its female employees. Through daily teamwork and collaboration, we aim to create a workplace environment where ideas and opinions can be shared, free of gender biases.

To better understand what Women’s Day means to our employees, we asked Catherine L. and Kiana M. to tell us why celebrating the day is important and how they relate to it.

“It is a continuous work in progress striving in the right direction”

Who is your female role model and what you would do if you could spend the day together?

Betty White – she was a feminist, civil rights supporter, animal activist, brilliant as an actress, and an overall nice human being. Based on her positive attitude where she lived to almost 100 years old, experiencing so many adversities and successes. I would love to hear her secret for a long, happy life.

Why is Women’s Day important to you?

Prioritizing including women in the workplace provides opportunities for women to achieve career goals. This allows employers to leverage the ideas and experiences of a more diverse field of employees and contributes to better overall employee well-being.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #Breakthebias. How can workplaces create a culture that reflects this theme?

Medicom practices equality by hiring individuals regardless of their gender. A workplace should promote equal opportunities amongst employees regardless of their gender. Women should feel safe, protected, and heard by their employers.

How have things in the workplace changed from the beginning of your career to now?

I started in a secretarial role at the beginning of my career which has evolved now into an assistant role that feels more like a partnership with my managers. There is more respect for women in the workplace and recognition of their abilities. The way workplace positions are viewed today is still constantly evolving and improving to allow women more opportunities and advancements in their career.

What would be an inspiring quote you would like to share with the women in your life?

“Every woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We’re strongest when we cheer each other on” – Serena Williams

What’s the most important piece of advice you’d give to young women?

Trust your intuition; your instinct is always the best decision and will steer you on the right path.

Do you think there’s a stereotype attached to females in the workplace today?

In the last 50 years, women’s roles have changed tremendously. In some positions, there have been remarkable transitions and implementations of females in a specific role, while others still are male dominated. It is a continuous work in progress striving in the right direction.

“I’m getting less surprised comments when I express that I’m a Mechanical Engineer”

Tell us who your female role model is and what you would do if you could spend the day together?

I actually have a list of role models, each in a different area. If I want to pick one, I will say Maryam Mirzakhani. She was a mathematician and the first woman ever to win the Fields Medal, which is equivalent to the Nobel Prize but in mathematics. If I could spend a day with her, I would ask her to challenge me with some problems and we would geek out.

Why is Women’s Day important for you?

Well, I, like many other women, have had some unpleasant experiences! So, I would appreciate and take every chance to work towards the goal of having a world where gender equity rules while physiological differences are recognized and respected.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #Breakthebias. How can workplaces create a culture that reflects this theme?

I believe a good approach would be to create the culture of “starting from myself” and truly doing it!

How have things in the workplace changed from the beginning of your career to now?

I’ll extend it back from when I started studying because I have only started my career a year ago. But a big change I’ve felt is that I’m getting less surprised comments when I express that I’m a Mechanical Engineer 😊

What would be an inspiring quote you would like to share with the women in your life?

“Don’t stop until you are proud” – Unknown

What’s the most important piece of advice you’d give to young women?

Be confident and believe in all of YOU! Don’t let stereotypes or biased mindsets either bring or take away values!

Do you think there’s a stereotype attached to females in the workplace today?

Happily, I have encountered none so far in my workplace! 😊
