The COVID-19 pandemic revealed gaps in emergency preparedness and in the reliability of global supply chains.
At the outset of the pandemic, over 90 countries implemented export restrictions and/or appropriations on PPE. Global supply chains broke down and raw materials became scarce. Inadequate domestic supply and manufacturing capabilities left Canadian frontline healthcare workers without PPE.
Opportunistic fly-by-night suppliers entered the market peddling poor quality, unvetted products. Well-established suppliers engaged in questionable practices like price-gouging or failing to honour contracts. Goods were being sourced from manufacturers with low environmental and labour standards.

During the COVID pandemic, we partnered with governments and healthcare authorities and built new facilities in Canada, the US, the UK, Singapore, and France, where we just announced a major automated factory project for the production of disposable nitrile gloves.
Medicom is already working with the Government of Canada on domestic production of N95 respirator masks and ASTM Level 3 surgical earloop masks to ensure reliable domestic supply. The company recently announced the creation of Meltech Innovation, a new manufacturing subsidiary dedicated to the production and innovation of the inner filter material used in the manufacture of these masks. As a result of this and other local initiatives, Canada will no longer be the only OECD-country that does not have domestic production of this critical meltblown polypropylene filter.
